New to Market!
02-06 Style Dash conversion for 1983-2002 models for LHD dashboards
There are some great quality centre dash consoles for pre 2002 models on the
market, although most look nice, we have always preferred the OEM look of the
dashboard fitted to 02-06 Defender models.
We have had these made for our own project vehicles as a simple and cost
effective solution to get the OEM look but without the hassle or price tag of
using OEM parts.
If anyone has done a conversion to 02-06 spec dash you will know there is a ton
of work both in the hardware and also wiring. Essentially you end up swapping
every part of your dashboard just to get this look. The OEM dashboards will
only take the OEM switches which means a lot of rewiring for things such as the
hazard switch, rear wash wipe, rear fog light etc etc.
However this kit is designed to fit the existing dashboard and also designed to
fit the existing vent flap opening knobs.
A basic guide to fitting our kit is:
Unscrew your dash top
Remove any radio and housing if fitted
Remove the original grey dash trim that is just popped into place
Cut the raised area of your dash bottom so the new trim can sit into place
Sit this new section into place above your bottom dash
Attach to your lower dash using self tapping screws (as per original on 02-06
models) using the 4 recessed screw holes you can see on the lower section in
the photo.
Where the vent lever lifts up and down, you need to open up the hole
as the vent lever is wider and deeper on the pre 02 type dash than it is the 02 onwards
dash. This is easily done with a rotary multi tool with a small cutting disc.
Refit the dash top again. This clamps the top in place, however originally they
are also held in place to the underside of the dash top with small taper headed
screws. So you can re use the same screws that held the old grey dash piece
into place to secure the top of the new dash .
This is a very brief run through of fitting and there will be other minor steps
required to fit.
Your conversion to Td5 Facelift is done. It is then upto yourself what switches
or head unit you want to add to the new dash.
This is essentially a blank canvas and you can cut whatever holes you want to
add the switches you want.
If you just want to replicate the normal features you have out the factory on
83-02 models. You just need to cut the hole for the Cigar lighter in the recess
on the left of the panel, and then cut a hole for the wash wipe switch in the
recess on the right side of the panel. Then if need be cut the hole for your
head unit.
This kit is made from GRP and is a extremely sturdy unit and does not feel
flimsy in anyway. it is actually a lot more robust than the factory plastic
items.
The centre dash is screwed into place and removes just like the original
The moulding on these is extremely good with the exact same grain texture to
the main section as original, so once fitted looks and feels original.
These are a very good quality kit that we are fitting to £25k plus Defenders we
build as it makes the interior look so more modern and gives plenty of room to
add switches for extra such as electric window and extra lights etc
The recess where the radio goes in this is approx 205mm wide x 100mm high. But
you can cut it to whatever size you require.
In due course we will show a step by step guide of fitting with a full photo
walkthrough of how to fit.
Please remember these are a retrofit piece of kit and although straightforward
to fit for most people, you still need to have some common sense when fitting
or find a professional to fit for you.
Until production is upped, we have a limited supply of these so grab them while
you can as we expect these to sell fast
